For a time it was love. She liked his straw hat and thought it reflected his sense of utility. He liked her flowers and thought that maybe she would be easy. They rolled in the mud for quite some time until the dinner debacle happened. In a nice downtown joint she ordered scallops wrapped in bacon.

My god, he said.

It’s quite good if you don’t think about it being pig, she said.

He had never fallen for a cannibal before and ran from the restaurant squealing all the way home. She would tell her friends how she didn’t understand. She thought that men their age were progressives. Her friends would tell her to forget about the swine.
